Of course looks aren't everything, but the way your site looks goes a long way towards establishing credibility and giving visitors a positive impression of your site. Once they want to stay, the well-planned functionality of a site keeps them there and helps them accomplish their goals.
Here are a few more sites I designed and produced while working at New City Media.
(Click on the images to see a larger version of the before and after transformations. Click on the company title next to each number to see a live, working version of each site.)
NATIONAL SCIENCE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION (NSTA)
-- See the site The National Science Teachers Association, the largest organization in the world for science teachers, wanted a vibrant web site that offered its members and potential members resources that made membership more appealing. The sites look and feel needed to reflect its members' excitement and passion for science. The result was a web site that won a top design award from the regional Advertising Federation.

CHATHAM HALL
-- See the site
An all-female boarding school in Chatham Virginia, Chatham Hall wanted to reach several diverse audiences with one web site. Potential students, students, families of students, faculty, staff and potential employees all had specific high-priority content needs. The redesign addressed all these audiences and helped organize information in a intuitive architecture.

FLIPPIN DENSMORE MORSE & JESSEE
-- See the site
The law firm of Flippin, Densmore, Morse, Rutherford and Jessee provides excellent services for businesses, particularly those in the technology field. With only a quick glance at the original site, users may have thought they had accidentally unveiled an exterminator site. I helped Flippin find a new design that reached their target audience with a sophisticated, professional design that answered common client questions right from the front page.

CITY OF ROANOKE
-- See the site
The City of Roanoke's old web site relied on generic "clip art"-type images on its front page to identify sections, but users found it hard to use. In addition, nothing about the old site communicated the advantages of living or having a business in Roanoke. The redesign concept focused on expressing Roanoke's unique attributes and unusual balance of nature and city life, and the new navigation divided content into easily-accessible areas for specific audiences.

THERMORETEC
Leaders at ThermoRetec (now called RETEC) said their first priority was attracting new, talented employees who were driven to work in the environmental science field. The redesign needed to strongly tie the company with the desire to work to improve environmental cleanliness.
(Please note that the site recently has been redesigned internally by RETEC after it was purchased by another company, so the version of the site is no longer live.)
