The one thing I love about doing print work is that once it's finished it can never be changed. Of course that can be a double standard as well. All of my print work was done in the years before my work with the web and New City Media. Of course I'm always looking for an opportunity to get my hands wet again in this field.
Here are some of my first print pieces I did for Radford University as a student working in the CREATIVE SERVICES DEPARTMENT, 1997-1998. Kitty Irwin, the creative director, taught me a great deal about design and brought to me a love for the art. I have a great amount of respect for her and without her, I would not be where I am today. For that I am very thankful.

C AREER SERVICES GUIDE Radford Universities Career Services Center needed a brochure to help student find there way along the many crossroads involved when choosing a career. They wanted something fun and eye catching that would keep students coming back to their offices. I used fluorescent inks to give it an extra punch which also allowed it to be luminated under a black light.

SUMMER SCHOOL POSTER AND POSTCARD Radford Universities Extended Education department needed an attractive, but fun, eye catching poster and post card mailer that would stop students in their tracks to take a look at their summer school schedule. The poster got rave reviews winning a Merit Award at the Admissions Marketing R.E.P.O.R.T. and had student asking for extra posters to be put up in their rooms. I used fluorescent inks to give it an extra punch which also allowed it to be luminated under a black light.

POETRY READINGS POSTER Radford University needed a poster to advertise an upcoming poetry reading for poet Alison Hawthorne Deming. It was a very low budget project yet a project I imagined to be great. I decided to paint an illustration in oils referring to the Monarch Butterfly to portray the beauty of the butterfly and her love for it reflected in her readings. After a few minor tweaks in Photoshop I took it to a color laser printer (with the paper of my choice) where it was printed within budget. It won a Silver ADDY in the Illustration category for the Advertising Federation of the Roanoke Valley

WEAVING TOGETHER THE COLORS OF THE WORLD POSTER Radford University needed a poster advertising a week long festival call International Week. It hosted plays, movies, music and food from around the world giving the students a taste of other cultures. I was given the tag line: Weaving Together the Colors of the World. Now was the task of designing it on such a small budget. I used various programs for the design and used oils to create the header myself. My only printer option was the schools and it was a two color press. I wanted badly to use various colors representing the theme. With the help of my art director and his technical expertise we put together a complicated and successful print job that worked.

After Graduating from college in the summer of 98 my traveling instincts took over and I sold everything I had and moved to Hawaii. I had the great opportunity to live out one of my dreams which was learning how to surf. On the side I worked as a photographer but after a few months of living in heaven I wasn't satisfied. My need to design again took over and I bounced around from Miami to New York City looking for that perfect starting design job. I had no idea I would find it back at Radford University. I was given the chance to set up a completely new graphic design department within the EXTENDED EDUCATION DEPARTMENT, 1998 and continued to work there for 6 months before leaving to advance in my web career. I was on my own in which I benefited greatly from the extra responsibility. Here are a few samples of my work. Most jobs where low budget and the deadlines where fast but well within my capabilities. I soon felt like I became an expert at working with 2 colors.

GUEST SERVICES GUIDE Radford University was in need of a guide reflecting the hospitality of the staff as well as the University accommodations and local area attractions. This is a 17 page booklet doing just that. It contains fact about RU as well as the available services rendered, the locations and phone numbers. The easy to read guide also contains maps, directions to local attractions and the rules and conduct while staying at RU. Mainly directed for summer guests during conferences it was also used in the admissions office for prospective students.
The information load was very heavy and needed good organization and structure. I used icons representing the different sections within the booklet and color changes in text subjects so as to be clearly scanned by the user.

CREATIVE GENIUS AND MADNESS COUNSELING IMPLICATIONS CONFERENCE
A 4-page brochure advertising a conference devoted to mental health professionals and educators. Through this conference they will gain an appreciation and understanding of the development of genius and creativity as it relates to stress and mental health issues. The professional will be exposed to theories and interventions, which are effective in working with creative and gifted individuals in their work.
I let my imagination fly with this one using shapes and artistic art forms from past gifted individuals morphing them into my own representation.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT SUMMER INSTITUTES
A 4-page brochure advertising Advanced Placement studies being held at Radford University for beginning AP teachers. Studies included U.S. History and U.S. Government and Politics. Designed to refresh your course development skills and give the teachers the knowledge they need to effectively challenge the AP student.
For this I wanted to give it a simple, clean and patriotic feel.
